Autism is in the full academic name for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The disorder begins in infancy and early childhood, and is characterized by impaired social interaction, impaired communication, limited interests, and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors, with most children experiencing varying degrees of mental retardation that may persist into adulthood.
As of today, the exact cause and pathogenesis of autism is still unclear, and the current view is that it’s a result of predominantly genetic factor, with genetic and environmental factors interacting with each other. Although there are still many unanswered questions about autism, we know much more about it than we did before. Our understanding of autism has evolved over time, and the way we define, diagnose, and treat autism has also evolved.

•Social Communication:
◦ Delayed speech development accompanied by some specific speech abnormalities.
◦Difficulty in using words to interact with people.
◦Poor speech comprehension.
◦Stereotypical or repetitive use of language, or use of language in a particular way exclusive to their
individual.
• Social Interaction:
◦Limited using of eye contact, facial expressions, body posture and gestures, etc.
◦Inability to spontaneously share joys, interests, or accomplishments with others.
◦Lack of social or emotional interaction.
◦Failure to develop friendships commensurate with their level of competence.
•Restricted or Repetitive Behaviors or Interests:
◦A preference for one or more stereotyped and narrow interests and an abnormality in either the
intensity or concentration of interest.
◦Clearly and inflexibly attached to specific, nonfunctional routines or rituals.
◦A persistent preference for various attachments to objects.
◦Stereotyped and repetitive movement habits, e.g., hand clapping, finger twisting, and whole body
shaking.
